Animals are just ordinary non-sentient creatures that roam the world. Just like the wolves, deer, birds and whatnot of earth.
Mammals are warm-blooded, and most often fur covered creatures. In this book even Marsupials are counted to the mammal category, for simplicity. Mammals exist in water, in air and of course on land. Most mammals give birth to living young.
The Ratatorsk is a rodent about 20 cm in length plus 10 cm long tail. They are most often brown, or dark brown in color.
In nature the Ratatorsk live in swarms of 10-20 individuals. Usually in a dead tree that they hollow out.
The Ratators is a surprisingly intelligent for a creature of it's size. It is very easy to train it. It can even learn to understand simple speech. It also has a long memory. All of these traits make it an ideal spy.
Reptiles are cold-blooded creatures, who often bask in the sun to warm themselves. Amphibians are also in this category for simplicity. Because they are cold-blooded reptiles usually exist only in warm, or temperate climates. Some spieces can hibernate, and can thus exist in colder areas. Reptiles can be found in the air, on land and in water. Reptiles most often lay eggs, but some spieces are known to give birth to live youg.
Birds are warm-blooded creatures related more closely to reptiles than mammals. Their body is usually feather-covered. Most birds know how to fly. Those that do not are either powerful runners or swimmers. Birds most often lay eggs, and incubate them.
The Hala'Ur is a flightless bird that is on average 3m tall. The front of the head is decorated by a large orange beak with a serrated edge. With its two orange cat-like eyes the bird can see as well in night as day. The feathers are three shades of green to help the Hala'Ur blend in forests. The wings are folded with a large orange thumb claw sticking out. These wing-claws are used mainly in ritual battles between males. The large powerful legs are darker orange, almost brown in colour. The feet end in sharp claws made for grappling prey.
Wild Hala'Ur live in small groups of one rooster and 1-6 hens. The rooster will jealously guard its hens from any and all rivalry. During summer each hen will lay a single, orange, egg about 30 cm tall. All hens nest for 1 month after which a small fully-functional Hala'Ur hatches.
Hala'Ur are carnivores and they eat anything that they can catch. They hunt as a pack to bring down larger prey. Their natural enemies are wolves, and Hala'Ur eat them if they can catch them. Hala'Ur are quite intelligent and if their eggs can be captured and incubated, they will imprint on the first thing they see when they hatch, making an ideal mount.
